"If you have a back yard, you can do your part and help the world and yourself by raising some of the food you eat. The more you raise the less you will have to buy, and the more there will be left for some of your fellow countrymen who have not an inch of ground on which to raise anything. " - Bolton Hall, Three Acres And Liberty (Published by The MacMillan Company, New York. 1918)

Sustainable organic vegetable gardening is so important, and it's so true about the Victory Garden concept - I've done exactly the same thing by digging out and moving perennial flowers and replacing them with onions!
Another concern besides food is the rising price of bottled water. While we still seem to have ample supply, as droughts are hitting portions of the states and water resources dry up, corporation-owned water could potentially be the only clean water available.

you also need keys to the backyard... We waited ten years but finally yesterday got keys for the communal backgreen in the middle of our block. Now we can start gardening - we hope!
